Hello and welcome back to another blog post!
In today's blog, I will be discussing 3 coming-of-age movies you should add to your queue, and why.
Coming-of-age movies explore many relevant topics, whether they pertain to self-growth, self-discovery, romance, drug addictions, grief, etc. they will always be about simply growing up. Commonly the protagonist will be an adolescent or even a young adult. These protagonists will experience a journey of growth within the duration of the film. In my opinion, coming-of-age films will always leave you will a powerful message, and even after the initial watch will keep you thinking about the message. Below are three movies within the coming-of-age genre, that I believe you should add to your watchlist!
One: My Own Private Idaho.
A film directed by Gus Van Sant and starring River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. In this coming-of-age story, we follow Mike Waters, a gay hustler who has a severe case of narcolepsy, alongside his friend Scott Favor who is the rebellious son of the mayor.
The two travel from Oregon to Idaho and finally to the coast of Italy in search of Mike's estranged mother.
Along the way the way we can encounter the pair hustling for money, and encounter many tragic situations.
I would say this movie may not have a happy ending but there are many messages to be pulled from this movie. If you're like me this movie will provide several lessons to apply to your own life.
Two: Mysterious Skin.
A film Directed by Gregg Araki, Starring a young Joesph Gordon-Levitt, Brady Corbet, and Michelle Trachtenberg. This story follows Neil McCormick and Brian Lackey, in two separate journeys of coping with a traumatic event they both shared.
During the film we see Neil burying the traumatic event causing a surplus of self-destructive behavior.
While at the same time, we witness that Brian had suppressed what had happened and is trying to uncover what happened.
During the movie, we get insight into two different ways a childhood traumatic event is coped with.
Again, This movie doesn't depict a happy ending, and in my own words, this movie breaks your heart into a million pieces and does not bother to put it back together. Audiences who watch the movie may relate to these experiences and connect with any of the characters.
Three: Beautiful Boy.
Directed by Felix Van Groeningen, This film revolves around a young adult Nic Sheff (Timothee Chalamet), and his father David Sheff (Steve Carell). In the movie we witness Nic battling a drug addiction mainly focusing on meth. As a father, this is too much to handle for David, and throughout the movie we see David holding onto Nic's hand guiding him to the right path while hoping he stays on that path. David is forced to come to terms that he can only do so much to offer his son help.
I would say this film is very heartfelt and is in fact based on a true story. Again audiences who have been in Nic's shoes or have been in Davids can relate to this story greatly and pull many lessons out of the film. Overall the performance of the actors is something that will be remembered for years to come.
Hopefully, I have convinced you to view one or more of these films! Thanks for tuning in to another blog post! Stay around and tune into the next blog for more thoughts, opinions, and recommendations!
